Khalda logo

Khalda Petroleum Company - Kalabsha Central Processing Facility - HAZID, SCE, Bow-Tie

Khalda Petroleum Company is progressing the FEED phase for Kalabsha Central Processing Facility Upgrade Project. EP has been supporting the project with the implementation of HAZID Study, performance of Safety Critical Elements (SCE) study and development of Bow-Tie Diagrams.

The expansion project was required for the handling of increased production volumes and a higher water cut. The project is at the FEED stage and the SCE study began with a high level HAZID in order to identify the major accident hazards (MAHs) that might cause harm to personnel. The hazards were assessed using a five by five risk matrix with agreed definitions for likelihood and consequences. Following on from the HAZID workshop the identified MAHs were examined in more detail in order to identify threats, barriers, consequences and recovery measures. The details captured during the workshop were subsequently used to prepare Bow-Tie Diagrams. A Hazards and Effects Register was also prepared together with an SCE matrix.

Onshore phase VII Main Gas Compression Plant studies: High Integrity Pressure Protection System (HIPPS) protects the downstream processing plant. EP prepared Emergency Systems Survivability Analysis (ESSA) and Projectiles Study, which helped optimise the plant design, layout and operational constraints. HAZID, HAZOP and SIL study was also performed.

KJO logo

KJO – Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) – Middle East

Al-Khafji Joint Operations (KJO), operating and producing oil and gas out of the neutral zone between Saudi Arabia and Kuwait identified the need for Enterprise Risk Management, and deployed an expert team from EPConsult Energies to implement the programme. The ERM programme was initiated by establishing an agreed approach to implement the programme and subsequently performing a comprehensive gap analysis of KJO’s existing systems, followed by the development of a robust ERM framework. This involved deploying an ERM tool (EP-Risk), preparing a risk management manual and training KJO staff. Risk workshops was an integral part of the scope, where identification and risk mitigations were established. Workshops were designed to identify risks that affect individual departments and could prevent achieving strategic objectives. EP-Risk was used for the assessment process in order to determine top risks and establishing strategies for reducing the corporate risk-profile. With risk reduction measures identified across the corporate lines of business, the risk-profile was diminished by multi-million dollars over a two-year period. A compressive awareness campaign was designed to support KJO with implementation of the risk culture and integration of ERM in the business process. Recognise Risks – Reap Rewards!
